Debbie Gilbert says she’s grown up with CAA. And that’s not really stretching the truth. For the past 28 years she’s been part of the family here at CAA North & East Ontario, working in various departments before taking on the role of Travel Store Manager for our Sudbury store a decade ago. Her long tenure hasn’t dampened her enthusiasm at all. In fact, she still gets up every day looking forward to going in to work.
“I’m very busy either promoting the store in the community, helping Members and clients, or managing my six talented employees,” she says. “I never have the same day twice and that’s what I love the most – working here is never boring!”
Having caught the travel bug at an early age, she’s had the opportunity to explore the world, including heading off on some exciting and exotic adventures.
“My husband and I travelled on a safari in Kenya and it was life-changing,” she explains. “I have many more great experiences but this was by far the most memorable.”
Now she gets the chance to help others share that amazing experience, specializing in booking trips for African safaris, eco-tourism expeditions in Costa Rica and is always available to help with corporate groups.
She’s also an expert at packing.
“The best way to pack your luggage is rolling your clothes instead of folding them,” she instructs. “They take up less space that way. Also, if you’re travelling with a spouse or partner, split the clothes between the two bags – half of their clothes in your suitcase and vice versa. That way, if one bag goes missing, you both still have something to wear!”
So what’s the one thing Debbie never goes on vacation without? Her camera. Snapping a few photos to document a trip is a great way to keep those amazing vacation memories from fading.
